[Celebration] Giving Thanks Today and Everyday

Pumpkin patch

Hello, November, the season of pumpkins, pumpkin pies and thanksgiving in the U.S.  The history of thanksgiving dates back to the early 1600's when the Pilgrims gave thanks to God and celebrated the bountiful harvest after all the hardships that they experienced.  Pumpkins were a very important food source for them because it is very nutritious, delicious and has a good shelf life.  Nowadays, pumpkins are being used mostly for halloween decorations.  Many families with children visit different pumpkin patches and make carving an annual activity.  I just hope the children don't lose the real  meaning of the thanksgiving.
Pumpkin patch
One of the perks of taking public transportation is that you get to see and experience things that you'd otherwise miss when you're driving.  This time a year ago, I saw a pumpkin patch in one of the local churches in our area.  I wanted to check it out but by the time I had the chance to, they only had a few pumpkins left.  This year, I promised myself that I'd go before they were gone.

Who said that pumpkin patches are for kids?
I would like to end this post by sharing with you the verse that we have in our dining room:
"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
His love endures forever."
1 Chronicles 16:34
Be blessed!

[Travel] California Trip

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to fly to California to visit my folks and grace my "Lolo's" (grandfather's) 90th birthday celebration.  It's been quite some time since I last saw him and it was a blessing that I was able to greet and dance with him.  Oh yes, it was a ballroom dancing affair. His guests looked much older than we were, clad in their Hawaiian luau dresses and shirts and heated the dance floor like no other!  For those folks, arthritis didn't seem to exist!

It was a relaxing weekend spent swimming and enjoying the California sun.  I was able to eat good fish tacos from California fish grill, bacon fried rice from The Loft, salted mocha from Flurries shaved snowbar and Ube donuts and assorted dossants from Friendly donuts.  Whew!  Way too much food.

We went to Downtown Disney where I saw Olaf... lots of happy and funny Olaf's.

I stood in awe of this colorful wall of Lego bricks...
The Wall of Lego Bricks
...and amused by these cute fellas.
Lego characters
I also had the opportunity to worship with my aunt at Saddleback Church at the City National Grove. It was very timely because I was reading Pastor Rick Warren's book "The Daniel Plan" that time.
Saddleback Church
It was a fun-packed weekend that was too short.  My evening was cut 2 hours short coming back to Tx and as you might have guessed, it was a challenge going back to work the following day.  I thought it might be jet lag but that would be thinking too much already.

Until next time.  Be blessed!

[Handmade Tags] Father's Day Necktie Tags

Hello folks!  Before we bring the month of June to a close, let me share with you these Necktie tags which I made for Father's Day but may be used for any special occasion,  These tags are so small and very cute.

Materials:
Base paper, 2 x 3.5" , I used craft paper here
Blue paper, 2 x 1.5"
Printed paper, 1 x 1"
Glue
Ruler
Cutter

Instructions:
1.  For the collared base shirt, take your 2 x 1.5" colored paper and cut a slit measuring a few centimeters on each side, and about 1/2 cm from the top.  Fold toward the center.
2.  Take the printed 1x1" sheet of paper.  Fold diagonally then open flaps.  Follow the photographs below.
3.  Once the necktie is done, apply a dab of glue and stick it on the center of the shirt.

Oh yes, it was totally cool.  I made 55 tags which we gave to the Fathers in our church together with some other goodies.

See you again next year, June.

[Events] "Gone Fishing" Party Theme

A couple of weeks ago, we decorated the hall for a 70th birthday celebration with a Fishing Theme.  Oh, we had fun decorating!  We wanted the backdrop to be colorful and fun so we used buntings, a decorative fishing net, a wooden lighthouse wall decor, colored prints of different kinds of fish and photos of the celebrant.  You can see the how to make the buntings HERE.
Fishing Party Buntings and Decorations

One of his fishing buddies brought a life-size fisherman, complete with waders, fishing poles, nets, etc!  Oh, he looked cute, especially with his hat and shades.  The cake was nicely done and the food was delicious too.
Fishing Party Decorations

These are the centerpieces.  I used tall vases filled with river rocks.  We covered the outside with this beautiful fabric made by Hauptman fabric and tied it with twine.  We added wooden twigs to serve as fishing rods, and tied red and white wobblers with nylon.  Finally, we glued on fish biscuits.  So adorable!

Oh boy... we had too many parties to attend to in March.  What have you been up to?  Have fun!

[Events] Head Over Heels Surprise!

Do you remember this necklace that I made for our dear friend on her "Surprise High Heels Party?"  I forgot to show you how we decorated the hall for the celebration.  She loves wearing high heels so we decided to make it our theme and used gold, black and white.  The topiary centerpiece were handmade using gold and white tissue paper, wooden dowels, faux flowers and crystals arranged in a tall glass vase with stones and moss. We printed pictures of high heels and I applied Ranger's glossy accents to make it look oh so shiny, just like most of her shoes and adhered it to the glass centerpiece.  We made a total of 20 which really looked pretty.  The giant shoe on the background was  painted on a foam core board and adorned with red and white flowers.  The "Happy Birthday" sentiment was made using cricut.
Golden Birthday Celebration
Black, Gold, White
DIY decors
The letter blocks were handmade as well -  we painted it black with a gold trim.  There were a lot of guests so we had to figure how to best arrange the round and rectangular tables, 2 sets of buffet tables, roast pig carving table, dessert table and the sound booth.  It turned out pretty well.  We placed a separate presidential table which allowed them to have a perfect view of the program.  The cake was orange chiffon made and beautifully decorated by Jane&Jill.

Oh it was wonderful to see her so happy, being surrounded by so many people who love her.  Husband and I were super tired but it was the "good kind of tired."  This was my first major events arrangement and (pardon my boasting), it was beautiful!

Soli deo gloria!

[Celebration] Valentine's Date 2014: Aura Brasserie

photo [via]

My dear one and I spent our post-Valentine's date at Aura Brasserie with 19 other friends.  Aura is owned by Chef Frederic Perrier who is "widely recognized for his creativity and inventive nature by introducing Southwestern, South American and Asian influences in his cooking."  The restaurant is described as "innovative American with an 'inch' of French" and was named one of Houston's Top Ten New restaurants.

It was a cozy place with a long red seating area on one side and a wall featuring glass art on the other.  The menu was a tongue twister for us (lol) but we it turned out that we chose well.
(top Left to Right)  Tikal Locura, Lyonnaise, Filet Mignon, Filet Medallion,  Berkshire Pork Cheeks, Pan seared Striped Bass, Scallops and Lamb Chops

We got a bottle of Tikal Locura (locura = madness) from Sabores de Argentina.  It was a bold red wine made from a blend of Malbec, Bonarda and Torrontes which are three of Argentina's best variety of grapes.  It was really good - smooth and delicious!  For wine lovers, it is 94 points.  The bottle was encased within an authentic Aregentine pato which is a leather cradle designed to hold the ball in the game of Pato which is Argentina's national sport.  The game combines elements from polo and basketball.  Pato in Spanish is 'duck' and it started out as a violent game - I don't want to get so graphic here but I know you get the point.

Médaillons de Filet aux Champignons $26 Filet Medallions with Truffle Mushroom Risotto, Cognac Sauce

Whew!  That's a mouthful.  The food was unique and delicious.

We don't have children and while our friends had to pick up theirs from the sitters, we went straight home. That's when we realized that "husband and wife" alone time off from the children is very very precious and important to keep their marriage going.

Love to you all!

[Food] Celebrating 5 at "Underbelly"

Today is our 5th Wedding Anniversary (cue in "Your Everything" by Keith Urban) and we are just grateful to God for giving us another year with each other.

Five years seemed to have gone so fast and now it's time for a C-E-L-E-B-R-A-T-I-O-N!  We went to "Underbelly Houston" to discover the "story of Houston Food."  The restaurant is owned by Executive Chef Chris Sheppard who is also Food and Wine's 2013 Best New Chef.

We loved how they decorated the place because it was spacious and homey.  They added the a lot of wood panel that reminded me of our place in Manila.  Their wall features other local establishments such as Korean and Vietnamese restaurants to show how diverse Houston's restaurant world is.  The kitchen is open to guests so you can see the chefs prepare what they do best.  The shelves were full of jars of picked vegetables, sauces and stuff to fill your pantry.
with Exec. Chef Chris Sheppard of Underbelly Houston
And now, for the good stuff.

We tried the Korean Braised Goat and dumplings which is one of their more popular appetizers.  It was delicious!  The meat was so tender with a hint of spice and the dumplings were soft with a bit of crunch.  The portion size was enough for both of us but if you're with a bigger group, you'd have to order more.  It's served family style so order several kinds to share with the group.

I got the Vietnamese Stew with Beef, Carrots and rice noodle.  The soup was thicker than the traditional pho and the beef was very tender.  Mr. C got the UB smoked burger which was really good.  The beef patty and thick slices of onions  topped with cheese was just yummy!

We didn't finish our main course because we had to leave space for dessert.  I got the Vinegar pie, salt brittle.  Be prepared to tickle your taste buds with this dessert that combines sweet, salty and sour in one bite (I know you are starting to drool right now).

He got the Meyer pound cake, kissel, sezamki and butter ice cream.  The whaaaaat?  I've never heard of kissel only to find out it's an Eastern European dessert of crushed berries that have been thickened with starch.  Sezamki on the otherhand is a Polish candy dessert using sesame seeds and sugar.  It's similar to peanut brittle or "bandi" in the Philippines.

Well, we were able to meet, chat and shake hands with Chef Chris who was very friendly and accommodating.  We had a good experience and would definitely return to try their dinner menu.  The price of their lunch menu ranged from $7 - $16 with desserts at $4 and $9.

Oh, the price of good food, great company and cherished memories.

We definitely left with our bellies satisfied and our hearts filled with joy.
Cheers!

[Flashback] December 2013: A Blessed Christmas to You!

Yes, my favorite season is here!
From our home to yours,
a Blessed Christmas to you and your family!
From top to bottom, clockwise:  handmade Christmas tree ornaments, Santa's hat tarts, Handmade cards for the in-laws, Egg tarts, Christmas tree sugar cookies, decorated handmade tree
These Christmas Tree cookies are delicious.  I tweaked my sugar cookie and icing recipes and it turned out great!  Mr. C made a paper mache tree where we attached the cookies for display during our church luncheon.  The santa hat strawberry looked cute.  It took me awhile to make the tart shells - I had a hard time putting it on the baking pan.
Oh, I tried making egg tarts that wasn't too sweet but nevertheless delicious.

For our gifts, we gave out "Some of our Favorite Things" this year from Trader Joe's.

Thank you for support and time in reading our blog.
As the new year dawns, I wish good health and more blessings from God.

[Flashback] May 2013: Happy Birthday, Mr. C!

May is Mr. C's birth month.
We hosted a lunch for his teammates and the church choir to celebrate our birthdays.  We did a "Barrio Fiesta" theme with banana leaves and mini buntings on the table.  Food was good:  rice, Bistek Tagalog (beef steak cooked with onions, Filipino style), pancitfried eggplant, pork barbeque, smoked fish, shrimp, fruit salad and canonigo for dessert.

He had another celebration on his actual birthday.  Read more about it here:  Cinco de Mayo.
Cheers!

[Flashback] April 2013: Happy Birthday to Me!

A Blessed Christmas to you, my friend!
Happy birthday, Jesus, the Reason for the Season!

Since it's also April Flashback today, .allow me to say Happy birthday to me!  Wooohooo!
Mr. C treated me to a birthday dinner at Azuma Sushi and Robata.  This is one of our favorite Japanese restaurants.  We love the hot rock beef where sliced new york strip is cooked on a hot rock with a special dipping sauce, shrimp tempura, soft shell crab roll and the kamikaze roll.
Azuma Sushi and Robata
A birthday is not a birthday without a cake, or in my case, cupcakes!
In the complex of Azuma is Houston's Crave Cupcakes.
Houston's Crave Cupcakes
I love cupcakes though the icing can be too sweet.  These 4 flavors are my favorite:  Red Velvet, German Chocolate,  Coconut and Chocolate & Cream.  Waaaahhh!  Aren't the fondant topping cute?
"A gourmet twist on a nostalgic favorite."
Now, that's what I'm talking about.

[Flashback] March 2013: Cowboys and Highways

Have you ever been to a Rodeo?  Well, if you're planning to visit Houston, make sure it's during the Houston Livestock show and Rodeo.  We were there this year and it was really fun!  Incidentally, "the 2013 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo attendance reaches an all new-time high with 2,506,238 visitors. This number exceeds the city of Houston population."

I wanted to watch Bruno Mars but by the time we bought the tickets, it was almost gone.  We ended up sitting at the topmost level of Reliant - notice the aluminum siding behind us (3rd row, right most).  It was a nice concert - two children seated in front of us were grooving to his every song... they were a sight to watch as well.
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo 2013
One of the long road trips that we did this year was when we attended our dear friends wedding at Hilton Head, South Carolina.  It took us a day and a half of easy driving where we ate a lot of good food.  On the way to NOLA (New Orleans, LA), we ate at Steamboat Bills in Lake Charles where we tried their shrimp etouffe pistolette.  WOW!  We arrived at 9 pm  where we had a late dinner at Deanie's Seafood.  We got to try their Barbecue Shrimp.  Delicious!

The next morning, we made a quick tour of The French Quarter and of course, we grabbed our Cafe du Monde beignets and cafe au lait.  The place is usually packed but we were fortunate that we were able to sit and enjoy.  Have you ever had a Po-Boy?  It is a traditional submarine sandwich that is served on a New Orleans style French bread.  Johnny's Po-Boys is one of the oldest and popular restaurants serving PoBoys. Oh boy, there was a long line when we got there and it took us 40 minutes to be served.

It was a long and nice drive to Hilton Head.  The venue was beautiful and the wedding was lovely!  We were able to make a day trip to Savannah, Georgia.  We rode the Old Town Trolley which was cool because we were able to learn about the area and walk around.  We got to to try Leopold's Ice cream - it's a place with “Good Things to Eat. Good Things to Drink."

'Twas great to see loved ones and friends once again.
Cheers!

[Flashback] February 2013: Firsts of Many

February 2013 brought many "Firsts" for us.
My dear husband was chosen to be one of the godfathers of this cute little baby.
Tried out Joe's Crab Shack on Valentine's Day.   Yummy to the tummy.  ♥
 I won 1st Place in our Department's Chili Cook-off.  Yay!  ♥

Well, I made a several cards for family and friends this month (which is also a first).
I also tried making an Origami heart card for my husband for Valentine's day.

My necklace was featured in Art Bead Scene's monthly Challenge tour.
ArtBeadScene
Hmmmm.... I'd like to join more challenges in 2014.  That would be another "First" for me.  LOL.

[Flashback] January 2013: Celebration and Travel!

Nine days from now, we will be welcoming Year 2014.  Oh boy... where did the time go?
January is our wedding anniversary month and we celebrated our 4th this year.  Oh, what a joy to be married to my husband.  God has blessed our marriage with His grace and love.  We may not have a lot financially but we never grew hungry and even enjoyed the pleasure of travel and good food.  I totally love the professional stainless steel bowls that he gave me.

We've never been to San Antonio so we decided to visit and check out the featured restaurants for the weekend.
Carmens de la Calle -  We were able to meet the owner, Carmen and watch Flamenco.  Very nice!
Their sangria, paella and empanadas were delicious!

Mi Tierra - The place is open 24 hours and is always packed during peak hours.  We were lucky that there was no queue when we arrived.  When you enter the restaurant, be prepared to be transformed to a place filled with Christmas lights, shiny paper and trimmings.  As their website describes:  "MiTierra is a little loco and a lot of fun!"  Wooooo!  Their chicken tortilla soup is delicious and very traditional (not like those in TexMex restos).  Oh, when you do go there and try them out, check out their mural.

Lulu's Bakery and Cafe - Lulu's takes the quote:  "Everything is BIG in Texas" to heart.  Golly!  Their "Texas sized portions of great tasting home cooking at reasonable prices" philosophy is just that.  HUGE!  They were featured by Adam Richman of Man vs. Food for their Country Fried Steak and 3 1/2 lb cinnamon roll.
They speak highly of their country fried steak which my husband really loved - he got the "Deputy Special" which was more than enough for both of us.  Our visit wouldn't be complete without trying the cinnamon roll - it was really huge but surprisingly soft, moist and not too sweet.  We had to take it home where it lasted a couple of days before we could reach the "nugget" or the yummy, center of the roll.
San Antonio Texas, Carmen's, MiTierra, Lulu's Cafe
The Riverwalk was beautiful!  The weather was sunny and cool, perfect to take the river cruise!
That Sunday, we went to church at Oak HIlls Church after which we had a hectic social schedule:  we met with my Uncle and his family for dinner at the original location of Rudy's in Leon Springs.  Well, I don't know if our minds were conditioned, but it tasted better than the other branches (my folks said it's this particular locations' roasters makes the difference).  After dinner, we met with my sister-in-laws beautiful niece.  I made her a polymer clay heart monogram and card.

Fun times and wonderful memories!  It was a nice way to start the New Year!
Cheers!

[Celebration] Happy Thanksgiving!

This week, America is celebrating Thanksgiving.  This is my 4th year to celebrate Thanksgiving in the US, the 2nd in TX.
I remember my First Thanksgiving in 2010 in Chicago.
On my Second Thanksgiving, I made chocolate dipped cookies.

Our first thanksgiving in TX was spent with our dear friends who helped us transition during our move.  I baked "Canonigo" for the first time that day.

I made several "firsts" on this years thanksgiving season.  This was the handmade card that I sent my in-laws.  It was my first time to use Ranger alcohol inks to make the background, then stamped a maple leaf using Staz-on ink.

Thanksgiving Card and Fall Sugar Cookie inspired by SweetAmbs

I also made sugar cookies for the first time using a leaf cookie cutter and painted it using SweetAmbs' tutorial.  I super love her videos and the neatness of her work.

SweetAmbs Fall Leaves

Well, it was also my first time to go to a liquor store to buy a small bottle of vodka, for arts' sake.  LOL. Oh boy, it didn't taste good at all.

Everyday is a day to Give Thanks.
What are you thankful for?  Do share it with me.

Happy Thanksgiving, America!

[Baking] Caramel Cake with Hydrangea Flower Icing for Grandparent's Sunday

We are celebrating Grandparent's Day today!
Here's a short summary on how it came to be.

As a tribute to them, I made this Caramel Cake decorated with hydrangea flowers.
Caramel Cake with Hydrangea Icing
Oh, I had a lot of fun making this cake.  I love hydrangeas - they are colorful, delicate and so pretty to look at.
It was my first time to make them and I think they turned out dainty and beautiful.

I went to this site to learn how to make them.  Look at how pretty these cupcakes by Glory are.

I'm more into cakes than cupcakes but I would like to do this in my next cupcake project.

May your week be filled with color and God's abundant blessings!

[Focus on Life] Week 28: Pretty Patterns

It's the weekend again, time for Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life.
It's Week 28 and its all about Pretty Patterns.

Let me share with you the card that I made for a friends special birthday.  My friend has a nice garden with different kinds of roses, hibiscus, and fruit bearing trees that her mom planted when she visited from the Philippines a few years ago.  It's her birthday and I wanted to make her a card full of flowers.

What do you think of this card?  Isn't it pretty?  I used a from Hero Arts rubber stamp H5481 Classic Bloom that I bought during last week's trip to the craft store.  I stamped the image using Versafine in Onyx Black several times on a piece of yellow cardstock to make a pretty pattern of happy flowers.

Hero Arts H5481 Classic Bloom Rubber Stamp
I colored the petals with a combination of yellow and orange colored pencils and the center with shades of brown.  The sentiment is from TPC Studio's "Everday Greetings Stamp" that I heat embossed using Versamark and Judikins black opaque embossing powder.

Finally, I added Mod Podge Dimensional magic on 2 of the flowers to add a little interest.  I love the gloss!

Did you notice the chevron pattern on the background of the photo?
Can you guess what that is?
It's the car seat cover.  We were running late for our birthday surprise so I took a last minute shot of it.  Pretty pattern, right?

Thanks for stopping by to see my pretty patterns.  Let's head over to The Studio Sublime and check out other pretty patterns.
Have a wonderful weekend ya'll!
See you soon!
