[Focus on Life Week 31] Hues of Blues

Hi!  It's Week 31 over at Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life and the prompt for this week was:

"Hues of Blues."

Let me share with you these special Origami Papers.  I love the rich, vibrant and assorted hues of blues!  these would look really good in origami projects, or as a pendant or in a handmade card layout.  Woohooo!

There are different types of origami paper:

Kami - it is the basic, easiest and cheapest to buy.  It is thin, printed on one side and is easy to fold.

Origamodo - which means "way of paper folding" is handmade paper specially created by 

Micheal Lafosse.

Paper-backed foil - it is more expensive, flashier and is good at retaining creases.

Washi - thick handmade paper usually made with long fibered and soft paper.

Chiyogami - it is an inexpensive substitute for Washi paper.

[Focus on Life Week 29] Routine showers with Mr. Water

It's Week 29 at Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life and this prompt is:  ROUTINE.

"Week 29: Routine

Do you have a daily routine?

and even though it may be a small part of your day its a comfort,

Meet Mr. Water.

Isn't he cute?

Mr. Water migrated to the USA from the "land down under," Australia.  He was one of my souvenirs during our visit there.  There was a drought that time and people were reminded to conserve water by watering their yard on designated days for a specified time and to take quick showers, etc - oh, there was also a small blue hourglass with rubber attachments so you can stick it on your bathroom tile  but I lost it.

It's been 2 years since but he still keeps me smiling every time I take my routine daily shower.

Speaking of taking a bath - it doesn't take me long to finish:  from shampoo, conditioner, lather with body gel and rinsing.  In fact, my husband takes a longer time and oh my sister... no one can beat her (I love you, sis!)  I trained myself to move fast when I was a young student because I've always wanted to close my eyes a little longer in the morning - until I am fully awakened by my dad or mom's voice saying "Let's Go!"  and off to the shower I go!  Oh, fun times!

Please don't stay too long in the shower.  

Be kind to Mr. Water and conserve water.

[Focus on Life] Week 28: Pretty Patterns

It's the weekend again, time for Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life.  

It's Week 28 and its all about Pretty Patterns.

Let me share with you the card that I made for a friends special birthday.  My friend has a nice garden with different kinds of roses, hibiscus, and fruit bearing trees that her mom planted when she visited from the Philippines a few years ago.  It's her birthday and I wanted to make her a card full of flowers.

What do you think of this card?  Isn't it pretty?  I used a from Hero Arts rubber stamp H5481 Classic Bloom that I bought during last week's trip to the craft store.  I stamped the image using Versafine in Onyx Black several times on a piece of yellow cardstock to make a pretty pattern of happy flowers.

I colored the petals with a combination of yellow and orange colored pencils and the center with shades of brown.  The sentiment is from TPC Studio's "Everday Greetings Stamp" that I heat embossed using Versamark and Judikins black opaque embossing powder.  

Finally, I added Mod Podge Dimensional magic on 2 of the flowers to add a little interest.  I love the gloss!

Did you notice the chevron pattern on the background of the photo?  

Can you guess what that is?

It's the car seat cover.  We were running late for our birthday surprise so I took a last minute shot of it.  Pretty pattern, right?

[Focus on Life Week 27] Texture

Hello there!  It's Week 27 over at Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life and it's all about Texture.

" From the course to the soft and fluffy, textures are always at our fingertips but we tend to be too busy to notice. Textures surround us at any given time, we sometimes just need to slow down a little and give them a little attention. Run your fingers down the hem of a quilt or pick up that dried leaf and focus on what your finger tips feel."

I like adding texture in my crafts such as this card - done with textured paper and accented with paper flowers.
A few days ago, I also shared a tutorial using dimensional adhesive.

I also use texture in my jewelry such as in this necklace where I added an embossed a Vintaj blank.

Texture may also be applied to food and this homemade mango crab salad is full of it!  I combined lettuce, imitation crab and fresh, sweet mangoes.  The dressing was a combination of creamy garlic and Bragg's Hawaiian dressing - it tasted perfect!

[Focus on Life] Week 24: Green

Welcome back!  It's Week 24 over at Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life and this weeks' prompt is GREEN.  Sally described the prompt as follows:  

GREEN:  the color of balance, growth and harmony.

GREEN:  evokes the feeling of calm and symbolizes self-respect and well-being.

I totally agree with her!  To me, it means life - natural and organic.

This is the photo that I want to share with you.  Can you guess what these are?

Doesn't it resemble a bamboo tree?  

Well, these are tissue rolls that I have been saving for whatever.  My husband would laugh at me when I ask him not to discard odd stuff for me especially when I tell him that I will be using them one day - I think he hasn't realized that I am just recycling and trying to save the environment.  Hahaha!

Well, the day has come for these rolls.  I mixed green and black acrylic then painted them to look like the bamboo trunk.  For added interest, I added a white paper quilled white flower matted on a textured yellow cardstock.  I like how it stands out, looks very fresh.

[Focus on Life] Week 23: Typography

It's Week 23 at Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life over at The Studio Sublime and the prompt was:  Typography - the power of the written or typed word can be more powerful than you thought!

The style and appearance of printed matter has an effect to how we view items, websites, businesses, book titles and the list goes on and on.   Is the typography pleasing to the eye, does the font pull you in, draw you away, make you feel inspired?  This week focus on the printed word and see what the words are saying to you!

I wanted to share something that's been my bestfriend for the past months.  I love receiving stuff from the mail!  The excitement is overwhelming at times especially if it's something that I have eagerly waited on and more so if it's a surprise package.  Woot woot!

Most people these days prefer to write emails or send text message through their smartphones.  That's good but sending someone snail mail is even better.  There is something about opening a letter or a card from someone you know.  I know you hate getting junk mail, utility and credit card bills - you are not alone - just shred and throw them away.

Send someone a letter and make that someone happy.

[Focus on Life Week 22] Foodie

It's Week 22 over at Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life:  "FOODIE."

I love this week's prompt as it is very close to my heart, or should I say, my tummy.  Yes, I'm one of those who take photos of their meal before gobbling it all up.

Do you like Samoas Girl scout cookies?  Oh, I love it!  

Did you know that Breyers have it as one of their flavors?  Yum yum!

This is our new favorite flavor - we love the chocolate covered coconut.  Ahhh!  The heat is on in Texas and what better way to cool down after a sweaty hot yoga workout than by cooling off my mouth, hahah!

It's the last day of May and we'll be halfway through 2013 by midnight.  Wonderful!  Pretty soon, us crafters have to come up with our handmade cards and holiday sales and gifts.  Goodluck to us all!

Tomorrow will be a busy day for me and dear husband as we will be joining the "Loving Houston" project where we will be doing home improvement and beautification for people in need.

It's Week 20 with Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life.  This week's prompt is "Looking Up."  

It's funny how we begin to take a serious look at things that we normally don't even bother to look at.  Can you guess what this alien looking creature with fuzzy wings is?

Hehehe.. it's my craft room lighting and fan fixture that I never thought would look so weird until I looked up.  This creature comes alive at night and on dark, rainy days to keep me company and cool me off while I work on my projects.

[Focus on Life] Week 19: Hope

Welcome to Week 19 of Focus on Life by Ms. Sally Russick! 

HOPE.

It is always a comfort to see light in the midst of darkness.  That, to me is Hope.

HOPE

This is a very timely prompt in my case.  I missed last weeks' Focus on Life: Abstract because 

hubby and I were busy helping out our friends.  It was a very physical and emotional week as 2 of our good friends were 

brought to the hospital - one due to bleeding and the other due to complications of dialysis.  

Oh, it brought our group of friends to our knees praying and hoping that everything will be alright.

My hope is in God.  

Lamentations 3:25 says

"The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him."

Today, both our friends are post surgery and on their way to recovery.  

When you feel like you are in the dark, be assured that there is a light that can guide your way.

[Focus on Life Week 17 and 7th BSBP] Color and Bead Soup Blog Party

Hello friends!  Oh, it's a busy day over at The Cabby Crafter.

Today is Week 17 of Focus on Life with Ms. Sally Russick and the theme is COLOR.  Wow, I love color especially primary colors because it makes me feel happy and very festive.  This is a photo of the mini buntings that I made for the luncheon that we will be hosting tomorrow.  The width measures 1 inch and was securely hung on a yarn.  Oh, I love how colorful they are! 

Today is also the 3rd Reveal day for Ms. Lori Anderson's 7th Bead Soup Blog Party.  As I mentioned HERE and HERE, I was paired with Rebecca.  She gave me a beautiful assortment of beads along with a polymer clay pendant.and a couple of nice clasps. 

I love being challenged!  Have you stared at your beads and components, doodling on your sketchbook and wondering what to do with them?  The antique bronze clasp was adorable and I wanted to work around it.  I wanted it to be one of the focal points of the necklace.  This was the first time I've made this design and I think it works well - it draws the eyes to the heart pendant.
The clasp was for a 3-strand necklace:  I used one for the chain, 1 for the leather and last for the dangling chain.  I worked the wire wrapped beads around it.  I like the pop of green leaves - it complements the shades of blue beads.

Next, I made a bracelet.  I did wire work on the rectangular glass bead as well as the round beads.  The upper half of the bracelet is like a bangle and the bottom part is hinged to allow ease of wearing. The earth tones of the bracelet makes it so rich!

[Focus on Life Week 16] Go for a Walk

Welcome back!  

It's Week 16 at Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life and the promt is:  "Go for a Walk."

I walk fast oftentimes, as if I'm in a 'walkathon.'  There are times when I feel like I'm gonna take off - that happens when I'm almost late for the bus... thanks to the train for taking a long time to pass.
Ohhh, I got a lot of stories to tell about the happy times of a commuter on public transpo.

The walks that I love the most are the ones that I take with my DH (dear husband).  A few weeks ago, I shared photos that I took during our afternoon stroll at the Japanese garden and Herman park.  Here are some more.

 

This pathway is one of my favorites!  I enjoyed taking in the view, the variety of textures, and the play of colors.  Beautiful!

In the next photo, I wanted to show you the canopy of trees along Herman Park.
These trees look old, with a lot of character and numerous stories to tell, if only they could speak.  

Have I mentioned that our afternoon date was free?  Oh, it was!

I bought my boxed lunch from work that came with a sandwich, soda, chips and a cookie.  We sat on one of the benches and enjoyed our time chatting and people watching.

Don't you love relaxed days like these?  

We are planning to make another trip to the park soon.  It was a very nice respite from the busy hustle and bustle of the city.

[Focus on Life Week 15]: Aged Beauty

It's Week 15 of Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life:  "Aged Beauty."

Finding a piece to photograph was challenging because I left most of my old stuff back home until I saw the 2 violins that my sister-in-law and her husband gave me last Christmas.  

I thought, "Oh yeah... those definitely fit the category of aged beauty."  These were his when he was a little boy - I think he was really into it because he had 2 of different sizes.  

They need a little makeover and fine tuning but they look gorgeous to me as it is.

I made this collage to show you the detail and craftsmanship that it took to make these beauties.  Take a look at the beautiful inlaid mother of pearl on the bow.  One of them was a "handmade copy of Antonius Stradivarius" made in April 1978.  Wow... 35 years ago.

Check out the leather case behind...  lovely!

I don't play the violin but I'm surrounded with children who play really well.  I'm a big fan of our Pastor's daughter who is part of the orchestra and chamber in her school... oh my, those kids are dedicated!  Maybe one day, I will be able to hold the bow and make a crisp note.  Good luck to me.

Oh, I wanted to share with you what I made for our Philippine Polymer Clay Guild Challenge that was about surface treatments.  I covered a glass container:  the cover with millefiori canes and the body with textured clay and mica powder.  I also added LP's foil, alcohol inks, acrylic paint and TLS.

[Focus on Life Week 14] Up Close

It's Week 14 at Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life at The Studio Sublime:  "Up Close."  Our task this week was to use our macro shot to see how close we could really get.

This afternoon, we went to the Japanese Garden and enjoyed every minute of it!

Take a look at these pine needles... I love the fresh green color!

This lovely azalea was just screaming "shoot me!"  The stamens look so delicate and very dainty.

This last photo is the post of the bridge taken by the pond.  It's so rustic, weathered and very nice!  I like how you can see the stream of water in the background.

I had a nice time taking macro shots of objects of nature.  I usually take macro photos of my craft projects, polymer clay, jewelry and handmade cards so this was a great challenge.

[Focus on Life Week 13] Faith

It is Week 13 at Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life:  Faith.  

For Christians, we are celebrating Holy Week, remembering the suffering and death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The Bible in Hebrews 11:1 (King James Version) says:

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

The Bible is the only inspired, infallible Word of God!  Historians agree as to the authenticity of the New and Old Testament writings.  There are people who try to disprove it but the Bible itself declares, 

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God [by the Holy Spirit]..."

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence if things not seen."  Hebrews 11:1

One of my favorite Bible verse is John 3:16, 

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, 

that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life."

God the Father gave up His Son for us.  His gift of eternal life is free to us, but it cost Him crucifixion.  God loves every person with an unconditional , divine love!  He created us to live in relationship with Him, but the Bible says that sin and death entered the world through Adam.  The penalty of sin is spiritual death but Jesus willingly died on the cross, in our place, to pardon us.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son,
that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life."  John 3:16

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the central pillar of Christianity and the evidence for its historicity is conclusive.  By His resurrection, Jesus conquered sin and death, thereby offering new life, eternal life, to us!  

Jesus Christ claims to be the ONLY WAY to eternal salvation (life in heaven).

We must trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and receive Him by personal invitation.  Here's how:

1.  Admit your need (I am a sinner).

2.  Be willing to turn from your sins (repent).

3.  Believing that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross and rose from the grave.

4.  Through prayer, invite Jesus Christ to come in and control your like through the Holy Spirit 

(receive Him as Lord and Savior).

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain, my dear friend!

I pray that the true message of Easter will touch your heart and your mind.  

It's not all about decorating easter eggs and buying candies.

[Focus on Life Week 12] Observe the Curve

Welcome to Week 12 of Focus on Life by Ms. Sally Russick of The Studio Sublime.  This weeks challenge is:  "Observe the curve" - doesn't it sound profound?  

Hello!  This is the cord of a telephone.   

In the era of wireless phones and gadgets, we still need these old time telephones.  When I was young-er, I was so fascinated watching American TV shows or movies where the actor or actress holds a looooonnnng telephone cord while going around their kitchen - we never had those in my home back in Manila.

Do you remember when you would talk to someone over the phone and depending on how intense the conversation is, you found yourself wrapping your finger around the cord and twirling it.  This is my telephone cord sitting at my office desk.  I like it all curved in one direction following an orderly pattern.  Call me crazy but those tangled telephone cords in another persons desk bugs me... ugh!

Observe the curve.  The shadows.

It follows a pattern... a rhythm... a cycle.. an order.

It can get kinda hypnotic too, you know.

As I think of it, I don't think the old telephone will be phased out... ever!  No matter how hi-tech our mobile communication system gets, it will always be there.

[Focus on Life Week 11] The Possibilities are Endless

It's week 11 in Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life:  The Possibilities are Endless.

When it comes to paper quilling - the art of twirling paper - the possibilities are endless!

 I love how colorful these papers are.  You don't need a lot of tools for this craft: - just a needle tool and glue.  You can used a needle tool or a slotted tool or even a barbecue stick.  I make the basic shapes while watching tv or when I feel like I need to relax... oh yeah, it soothes me.

[Focus on Life Week 10] All Wrapped Up!

Welcome to Week 10 of Ms. Sally Russick's Focus on Life:  "All Wrapped Up."

I will be sharing my interpretation of this challenge in a couple of ways.

First, as a jewelry designer, I enjoy working with wire though a bit challenging at times.  Freehand wire wrapping in particular is fun as it always yields a unique design while maintaining uniform shapes.  It is like being a potter who molds it to his desired shape.

I would like to share with you about my first experience at the Houston Livestock and Rodeo.  I have never been to once hence the excitement!  It is the world's largest livestock show and rodeo that aims to support the youth through education and also to encourage better agricultural practices with the exhibits and various presentations.  Their banner is "Celebrating Agriculture, Education, Entertainment and Western Heritage."

Oh, there was so much to see... and eat!  One event that we enjoyed was the Mutton Bustin' where kids between 5 and 6 years old tightly wrap their hands and legs on the sheep for 8 seconds.  It was so much fun!  I never thought sheeps could run that fast.

We were also able to watch Bruno Mars in concert.  It was awesome!  While waiting for the show, 2 young ladies seated in front of us could not help but wrap their hands on this fluffy cotton candy.  Oh, to be young and not too scared of sugar... such bliss!

The carnival offered several activities too but we were too old scared tired to even try them. 

I love this photo - how the steel poles and lights were wrapped very securely...  Who knows how many couples have tried riding this with arms wrapped around each other ♥.

And finally, we just had to get some Tex-Mex food:  Garlic Chicken Burrito.  A burrito or taco de harina is one of the more famous Mexican dish.  It makes use of a wheat flour tortilla that is wrapped to enclose a filling, whether fish, beef, chicken or vegies.   We've tried several burritos from the homemade to the fancy ones at restaurants.  This was delicious... the seasoning was perfect, not overbearing at all.

[Focus on Life Week 9] Knock, Knock

It's Week 9 of Focus on Life with Ms. Sally Russick and the theme is:  "Knock, Knock."

This is what I wanted to share with you today... "Our Door."

My husband and I have been married for 4 years and we made our first major move last April 2012.  We drove almost 19 hours from state to state, with loads of stuff - clothes and boxes of "my toys."

We have always been around family which was nice especially for me migrating from another country but we had to be on our own.  It was all in perfect timing, all according to God's perfect plan!

We stayed with friends for a few months just enough for us to find our own place and here it is... "Our Door."

The process in finding our own place was fun and exciting!  We prayed for it and decided on a 2 bedroom apartment which was big enough for us and my loads of crafts and tools.    It was fun visiting stores and shopping to find furniture and other techie "needs."  I have realized that no matter how long you have been with your husband, you still learn something new about one another... such as in choosing what to buy, where to put the sofa, etc.  - you know what I'm talking about.  After a few weeks or arranging and rearranging, we were happy to be finally home.

There is a frame hanging by our kitchen that reads:

RECIPE FOR A HAPPY HOME

4 cups of Love

2 cups of Loyalty

3 cups of Forgiveness

1 cup of Friendship

5 spoons of Hope

2 spoons of Tenderness

4 quarts of Faith

1 barrel of Laughter

To this, I add:  A load of God's grace and mercy.  It is what binds us together as husband and wife.

[Focus on Life Week 8] Monochromatic

This is week 8 of Sally Russick's Focus on Life and the theme is MONOCHROMATIC.

I hardly use black & white and sepia in my photos so Sally really challenged me.  Both of these photos were edited using PicMonkey.

Sydney Harbour Bridge, Australia, 2012

This was taken in Sydney, Australia in 2011 during our family reunion. My husband and I took a Sydney harbour sunset cruise and it was amazing!  I particularly love this photo because it captures some of the iconic images of Sydney, New South Wales, and Australia:  the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House in the background.   The bridge is also called "The Coathanger" because of its arch-based design.  The bridge is open to tourists who are brave enough to climb it, such as Ms. Oprah in 2010.  My husband and I are working on our "height issues" so its not on our bucket list for now... or ever.

Focus on Life Week 8

I took this photo this week when I saw how the sun shined on the branches of this tree.  Its past mid February and these branches will soon turn green with life - not that it's "dead" now but it will spring with beauty pretty soon.

This exercise in monochromatic photography or editing inspired me to explore more.

I will try to take photos of people and portraits, play with light and such.

[Focus on Life Week 7] Beauty of Flowers

Flowers at the Chicago Botanic Garden

Welcome back!  This week's Focus on Life by Ms. Sally Russick is about the Beauty of Flowers.

I love walking through lush gardens lined with beautiful and colorful flowers.  This photo was taken HERE on my first visit back in Spring 2009.  As an artist, I am often inspired by nature  particularly by flowers.  I am amazed at how vibrant and well coordinated the colors are and it makes me think of how great and awesome our Creator is. 

As you enter the garden, you will be welcomed by a row of flowers and a sculpture of Carolus Linnaeus.

Here's a brief description of the sculpture from the Chicago Botanic Garden Website:

This figure of Swedish physician Linnaeus (1701-1778) looms large in the history of science and is appropriately placed in the Heritage Garden. Linnaeus established binomial nomenclature, the international system of naming plants and animals that is still in use today.

He is shown reaching eagerly toward the plants in his path with a collector’s enthusiasm. The prominent bird in the sculpture — a golden plover, which can fly for thousands of miles — refers to the many students of Linnaeus who traveled the globe collecting plants for him to name.

We had a wonderful time strolling, talking and taking lots of photos - bless his heart for being so patient
